The Ozarks contains the largest Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc province in the world and the lead mining industry has been an important contributor to the region's economic and social fabric for over 250 years. St. Francois County was the site of one of the state's early mining companies. Today, this former mill area is known as Missouri Mines State Historic Site.
