The Ozarks enjoys a rich agricultural history and industry. There have been many challenges and unique events throughout the development of Ozarks agriculture. Among these have been the grasshopper plagues of the 1870's and the establishment of the beef cattle industry in Missouri. Today's challenges range from the financial sustainability of small farms to new infections such as Mad Cow Disease.
