In his book Ozarks Land and Life, Dr. Milt Rafferty explored the relationship between people settling in the Ozarks and the land on which they settled. He describes that relationship as one of constant adjustment, in terms of utilization of natural resources and cultural preferences. The environmental history of the Ozarks reflects these ongoing adjustments between the land and its residents.
