On August 10, 1861, the first major Civil War engagement west of the Mississippi River was fought just outside of Springfield Missouri at a place called Wilson's Creek. This battle marked the beginning of the Civil War for the State of Missouri. Dr. William Piston provides detailed information on this historic event and what it has meant to the Ozarks even today.
