Many settlers to the Ozarks were immigrants who arrived in the region following the Civil War. These groups often brought and maintained their own unique customs and traditions. One significant group was the Germans who settled in the hills near the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. The Germans became the only major non-English speaking group in the Ozarks.
