Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthe justice department brought its Final witness today in the federal case against New Jersey senior US senator Bob Menendez Megan rafy a financial forensic analyst for the FBI now over the course of seven weeks the prosecution has laid out a Litany of details from text messages and emails to serial numbers on gold bars to testimony about meetings with foreign agents all in an attempt to prove that Senator Mendez received cash and gold in exchange for political favors while the Senator addressed the cameras after court let out midday here's what he had to say government hasn't prooved in its case senior correspondent Brenda Flanagan has been in the courtroom every day this week Brenda what did you hear from the prosecution as they wrapped up their case hey Joanna the prosecution wrapped up its case at 1:20 p.m. this afternoon this is 7 weeks into Senator mendez's corruption trial and the defense of course kicks off its case on Monday the prosecution spent its final hour comparing Bob and naen menendez's personal bank accounts to the cash and gold that the FBI agents hauled out of their home during that raid back in June of 2020 they had a forensics expert go through it all and essentially testify that it didn't add up there was just too much cash that couldn't be accounted for in addition to those 13 gold bars and they want the jurors to believe that it adds up to no good essentially to Bri library now all all of the the cash and gold that was taken out $83,000 and about a quarter of a million dollars worth of gold can be traced by DNA and fingerprints to codefendant Fred Davies uh another $122,000 worth of gold can be traced to uh will Hanah who's the other codefendant in this case using serial numbers on the gold bars Joanna okay so Brenda how did Senator menendez's defense attorneys respond to these claims well the defense has argued that Mendez essentially hoardes cash at his home and that he does this because he doesn't trust Banks now the attorneys will claim that the prosecution didn't look at the older Senate and and Congressional Credit Union records and that those will show that Menendez has consistently taken out $400 $500 every couple of weeks and that he would take it home and he would stash it all over the house now the government came back and argued yeah but look at these bills you know there's tens and I'm sorry 20s 50s and $100 bills that date from 2018 on through 2021 which is when this bribery scheme was allegedly operating and of course a lot of this is circumstantial evidence which means the jury's got to make those connections in their head okay so we know that is a wrap for the prosecution what can we expect on Monday as the defense kicks off their case well we already know that the Menendez defense team is going to argue that she essentially kept the senator in the dark and was orchestrating this without his knowledge um we also have seen now that his attorneys are planning to call Two Sisters the first sister is the senator sister who is going to tell jurors why her brother distrusts Banks because his family fled Cuba and used money that they had hidden around the house to finance their way out now naen sister is going to be testifying as well and according to the records he's going to uh she's going to testify about the relationship between Bob Menendez and naen that essentially he had broken up with her at one point in 2018 because he was upset about her relationship with an ex-boyfriend and that how can you operate a a bribery scheme if if you're not even talking to one another that's what we expect to hear next week Joanna Brenda great information this week all week from the courtroom there in New York thank you so much thank you
